Flags Used During Our Formula Ford Events



(Various organization may have slightly different uses and requirements for each flag.)

  "Green Flag"
The track is clear, you are free to race.
  "White Flag"
One lap to go before checkered flag.
Can also be shown in conjunction with yellow flag, for emergency vehicles on track.
  "Yellow Flag"
Caution!
 Stationary: Usually an isolated problem area on the track. Use caution and no passing.
Waving: Big problem on track. Use extreme caution. No passing. Be prepared to stop.
  "Black Flag" (sometimes with car number)
You're screwing up.
Furled and pointing at you: Stop whatever it is you're doing. (A warning)
Stationary: Go to the designated black flag area, for a little "chat" with the officials.
  "Surface Flag"
Caution!
Oil or other debris on track.
If condition is severe, will be shown in conjunction with the yellow flag.
  "Meatball Flag" (sometimes with car number)
Something is mechanically wrong with your car.
Safely pull off the track or go to your pits.
(If ignored - will be followed by the black flag)
  "Passing Flag"
Stationary: Check your mirrors for faster car (s) approaching.
Waving: Faster car is trying to overtake you.
 (If waving flag is ignored -  will be followed by the black flag)
  "Red Flag"
Race is stopped.
Usually shown at every flag station.
No Racing. No passing. Reduce Speed. Go to Your Pits.
  "Checkered Flag"
The flag that everyone wants to be the first to see.
